The NHS has launched a critical appeal for flu vaccinations, with England’s Chief Nurse urging eligible adults to get their flu jab promptly. The urgency comes just weeks before the peak of the flu season, which commonly occurs in winter.
To meet demand, the NHS will offer 2.4 million vaccination appointments next week — enough to cover the entire population of Greater Manchester or Botswana. This push aims to combat an early flu wave, which is striking the NHS over a month sooner than usual. Cases are currently three times higher than at the same time last year.
The early warning follows Australia's record-breaking flu season, which often predicts trends in England’s flu activity.
"Eligible adults are urged to come forward now for full protection before the flu season peaks."
Strategies such as delivering vaccinations directly in care homes and using community pop-ups have helped increase uptake.
The NHS urgently calls on eligible adults and children to get their flu vaccines now amid an unusually early and severe flu season, following Australia's record outbreaks.
