ANU Report Quantifies Climate Impact of Woodside's Scarborough Gas Project

A recent study by the Australian National University (ANU) has put a number on the climate impact of Woodside's $19 billion Scarborough gas project, marking the first time researchers have quantified the impacts of an individual project on climate change.

The report, published in the npj Climate Action journal, directly attributes nearly 0.0004 degrees of additional global warming to the project's at least 31 years of emissions from 2026.

The consequences would be great, said Professor Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, lead author of the report.

Woodside has argued that it is not possible to pin rising temperatures on one operation, but the study challenges the claim that emissions from the project will be "negligible".

The research provides a significant insight into the climate impact of individual projects, with the Scarborough gas project off WA's coast expected to operate for at least 31 years from 2026.
