Dan Trachtenberg, director of the Predator franchise, shared his vision for continuing Kevin Costner's controversial 1995 sci-fi film Waterworld. Known for reviving the Predator series, Trachtenberg has expressed interest in tackling the Waterworld IP next.
Speaking at the Predator: Badlands premiere, Trachtenberg revealed he would prefer to see a Waterworld sequel developed as a video game rather than a traditional film.
"The thing about Waterworld that I want to see is a video game," Trachtenberg said. "I want to see an open-world third-person action-adventure video game that is not a remake of the movie, but is a sequel to the movie. That's what I want to see."
Trachtenberg's idea follows a trend where video games serve as official sequels to popular films. For example, Ghostbusters: The Video Game (2009) continues the story two years after Ghostbusters II (1989), featuring a new playable character recruited to battle paranormal events in New York City.
Dan Trachtenberg envisions Waterworld's revival as a sequel video game, embracing new storytelling modes beyond cinema.
