Jim Belushi recently shared a cherished memory from early in his Hollywood career, highlighting his late brother John Belushi's rise to fame through one of his most iconic characters. John emerged as a standout talent in comedy as a member of the original 1975 Saturday Night Live cast.

Alongside co-star Dan Aykroyd, John helped create The Blues Brothers, evolving the act into a powerful blues and soul music group. Their first appearance as musical guests on SNL was in April 1978, and the concept soon expanded into a full band.

By September 1978, The Blues Brothers were opening for Steve Martin at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles, a moment Jim fondly recalls.

“I’ll tell you what I loved: I loved going to the Universal Amphitheater when they came to LA and they opened for Steve Martin. And John was so, so magnificent. I loved that moment, to see my brother just hit the top of his chart.”

Tragically, John Belushi died on March 5, 1982, from a suspected drug overdose just two years after these memorable performances. Following his brother’s death, Jim stepped into the role of Zee Blues alongside Aykroyd’s Elwood, at Dan Aykroyd’s request.
