Under a calm morning sky, the flags of the United Nations and the State of Qatar were raised together in Doha on Sunday, marking the start of the Second World Summit for Social Development.
The event symbolized the United Nations’ official takeover of the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) as the location where global leaders will unite to revitalize the social development agenda. The ceremony took place at the expansive conference venue.
Senior officials from both Qatar and the United Nations attended, accompanied by UN security personnel and members of Qatar’s Lekhwiya police standing flanking the flagpoles.
“This moment formally marks the handover of this landmark facility to the United Nations,” said Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs. “The QNCC is now transformed into a space where the global community will gather to advance solutions and renew hope.”
Ahmad Hassen Al-Hamadi, Secretary General of Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed a warm welcome to the international community, highlighting Qatar’s role as a host and partner in promoting high-level dialogue and collaboration.
The flag-raising ceremony in Doha marked a significant step for the UN and Qatar, symbolizing their shared dedication to fostering global social progress through cooperation and dialogue.
