Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is a strong collaboration between Koei Tecmo and Nintendo, delivering several surprises. Having played dozens of Warriors games and countless battles, I thought I knew what to expect from this title. However, it unexpectedly offers the closest experience to a new Star Fox game in almost a decade, allowing players to fly and shoot within the game.
The game follows a similar formula to its predecessor, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, focusing on action-packed battles while telling the prequel story to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It also serves as a direct sequel to Age of Calamity, building on its systems and mechanics and incorporating elements unique to Tears of the Kingdom.
This fusion creates one of the most compelling Warriors games in recent years, enriching the story of Tears of the Kingdom.
Age of Imprisonment recounts the Imprisoning War against Ganandorf, a conflict that ultimately leads to the events of Tears of the Kingdom. The entire story is set in the distant past, highlighting the meeting of Princess Zelda with King Rauru and Queen Sonia.
"Age of Imprisonment essentially does the exact same thing as the previous game... but it’s also a sort of sequel to Age of Calamity — directly building on the systems and mechanics of that game, while integrating the unique elements of Tears of the Kingdom."
"I genuinely did not expect that this would be the closest thing we’ve gotten to a new Star Fox game where you can fly and shoot in nearly a decade."
Author's summary: Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment creatively blends familiar action gameplay with fresh Star Fox-style flying combat, enriching the lore of Tears of the Kingdom through a compelling prequel narrative.
