Matt Jeneroux, a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) from Alberta, has stepped down from his position but will not be joining the Liberal Party. He announced his resignation on Thursday evening via social media, emphasizing that his departure was entirely voluntary.
“I consider my colleagues in the Conservative Party very close friends, and I will miss them dearly,” said Jeneroux.
Jeneroux shared that after his resignation, he had a positive conversation with Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative leader, who wished him well—wishes he reciprocated. He initially ran under Poilievre’s leadership with the hope that their party could form a government to inspire Canadians.
“I wish him and my colleagues all the best as they continue to raise cost of living issues facing Canadians,” Jeneroux added.
Earlier on the same day, Jeneroux released an official statement describing his resignation as a difficult but necessary choice.
“I ran in the last election hopeful that Canadians would put their faith in a team led by Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives, offering a chance to change Canada’s perception in our own country and around the world,” he explained. “I wanted desperately to play a role in that vision.”
While the outcome differed from his expectations, Jeneroux expressed respect for many newly elected members of the House of Commons. He also personally informed the Opposition Whip, a respected colleague and friend, about his decision.
“With all of this in mind, I spoke with our Opposition Whip – a colleague and friend for whom I have the utmost respect – to inform him of my decision to resign as a Member of Parliament.”
Matt Jeneroux resigns from the Canadian Parliament as a Conservative MP, maintaining respect and friendship with party members and affirming his support for leader Pierre Poilievre despite stepping down.
