Conservative Alberta MP Matt Jeneroux has announced his decision to step down from his seat in the House of Commons. The move follows several days of intense speculation that he might join the governing Liberals, a rumor that stirred tension within the party.
In a letter obtained by the National Post, Jeneroux, who represents Edmonton Riverbend, stated that he informed Conservative Party Whip Chris Warkentin on Thursday of his plan to resign at an unspecified date.
“It was not an easy decision, but it is, I believe, the right one,”
Jeneroux wrote in his letter, without specifying the reasons behind his sudden departure from Parliament. He was first elected in 2015.
The letter makes only limited reference to party leader Pierre Poilievre but expresses respect for “the many remarkable individuals” on both sides of the House of Commons.
Jeneroux’s resignation marks the second high-profile exit from the Conservative caucus in just three days, a setback for Poilievre less than three months before a scheduled leadership review in January.
The political environment around Parliament Hill remains tense as this unexpected development adds pressure on the Conservative leadership amid internal challenges.
Matt Jeneroux’s surprising resignation deepens internal Conservative tensions and comes at a critical political moment ahead of the party’s leadership review.
