Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux says he's resigning from the House

Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux Announces Resignation

Edmonton MP Matt Jeneroux has announced his decision to resign from the House of Commons, a move that may shift the balance of power as the Liberals seek to pass their budget.

Earlier this week, speculation circulated that Jeneroux might join the Liberals following Chris d’Entremont’s floor crossing. However, on Thursday, Jeneroux confirmed his resignation in a letter, without specifying his reasons for leaving federal politics.

“I wanted one last opportunity to address the House,” Jeneroux stated.

It remains unclear when he will officially vacate his seat or whether he will participate in upcoming budget-related votes. If the Liberals lose any of the three crucial votes this week, it could trigger a new election.

Jeneroux was absent from Thursday’s vote on the Conservative subamendment to the budget motion, which was defeated by the combined votes of the Liberals, Bloc Québécois, NDP, and Green Leader Elizabeth May. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre noted on X that Jeneroux’s departure would take place in the spring.

The next crucial vote, concerning the Bloc amendment, is scheduled for Friday, followed by a final vote on the budget motion later in November.
