A weather system moving into the area, primarily bringing rain, is forecast to deliver the season’s initial snowflakes as temperatures drop into the 30s, according to weather officials.
“It’s not a big deal,” said Birk, “but there might be slushy grass and walkways with less than an inch of flakes.”
Before 3 a.m. Sunday, temperatures are predicted to fall to about 35 degrees, creating conditions for a mix of rain and snow. The chance of precipitation on Saturday is 90%.
At O’Hare and Midway airports, skies are partly cloudy with temperatures at 55 degrees. Winds are between 5 to 10 mph with gusts near 20 mph expected Thursday night.
National Weather Service officials noted, “Showers and possible thunderstorms are expected between midnight and 3 a.m.”
Wind gusts will likely increase overnight, coinciding with a 90% chance of showers. Lake effect snow is possible from Sunday night through Monday night, with temperatures remaining in the 30s.
