Although Alberta’s fire season officially ends on Friday, dry and windy conditions in the southern part of the province have led to new fire advisories. Both the east and west sides of Rocky View County face a moderate fire risk due to these weather factors.
Rocky View County Deputy Fire Chief Bill Messner explains that issuing advisories late in the season is common because weather can change rapidly this time of year.
“This is definitely a period of season where honestly the weather can change very rapidly.”
The dry conditions have caused a rise in grass fires over the past week, with up to three occurring in a single day. Some of these fires may have been caused by human actions, such as discarded lit cigarettes.
“Please use the proper receptacles. Please don't flick them out of the window. That definitely can cause a lot of issues that way.”
Alongside the advisory, Rocky View County has issued a fire ban that suspends all outstanding permits for fireworks and outdoor burning. However, exceptions remain for barbecues, camp stoves, and indoor fireplaces.
Messner has not specified when the advisory might be lifted but expects it will stay in effect for at least another week as dry weather continues.
Summary: Rocky View County faces moderate fire risks due to ongoing dry, windy conditions, prompting a fire advisory and ban that could last another week amid increased grass fires and public safety concerns.
