Toronto Maple Leafs center David Kampf is currently away from the team as he evaluates his future following an assignment to the AHL. The 30-year-old forward was placed on waivers at the start of the season and joined the Toronto Marlies, where he appeared in four games, registering one assist.
“They’ve got a lot of forwards up and down the organization, and one whose status has been a little bit unclear in the last week is David Kampf,” said TSN’s Chris Johnston. “He’s been away from the Toronto Marlies, pondering his future and what he wants to do next. I’m told that could be coming to a resolution by this weekend. Could even see Kampf rejoin the Marlies.”
According to Johnston, a decision regarding Kampf’s next step could be made by the weekend, potentially involving his return to the AHL squad.
Kampf is in the third year of a four-season deal worth $9.6 million, averaging $2.4 million annually. The undrafted forward began his NHL career with the Chicago Blackhawks after signing a two-year entry-level contract in May 2017. He spent four seasons in Chicago before joining Toronto as a free agent in 2021 on another two-year contract.
After posting 26 and 27 points in his first two seasons with the Maple Leafs, Kampf earned a four-year extension in June 2023. However, under new head coach Craig Berube, his performance dipped in 2024–25, managing five goals and 13 points in 59 games while averaging a career-low 12 minutes and 24 seconds of ice time.
David Kampf’s uncertain future with the Maple Leafs highlights a difficult stretch in his career, as he reassesses his place in the organization amid reduced ice time and an AHL assignment.
