Florida’s 7-foot-9 center Olivier Rioux made his long-awaited appearance on Thursday night against North Florida, officially becoming the tallest player in college basketball history. The game, held in Gainesville, ended with a decisive 104-64 win for the Gators.
As the 19-year-old Canadian entered the game with just over two minutes remaining, the crowd of 10,065 erupted into chants of “Oli, Oli, Oli,” celebrating the world’s tallest teenager finally stepping onto the court after joining the team in summer 2024.
“It felt great,” Rioux said. “The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful.”
Although he neither scored nor collected a rebound, Rioux’s brief moment on the court marked a milestone. Standing at 7-foot-9, he broke the previous college record set by UNC Asheville’s 7-foot-7 Kenny George (2006–2008). Rioux also surpasses the tallest NBA players in history, including Manute Bol and Gheorghe Muresan, both 7-foot-7.
For comparison, Rioux stands three inches taller than former NBA centers Yao Ming, Shawn Bradley, and Tacko Fall (7-foot-6), and four inches taller than current San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama (7-foot-5).
Coach Todd Golden answered the fans’ chants by putting Rioux into the game as Florida led 102-61. The substitution drew cheers from the packed O’Connell Center, which was also hosting the unveiling of the 2025 championship banner.
