Several individuals fell ill after a suspicious package containing an unknown white powder was delivered and opened at Joint Base Andrews, a US military installation near Washington, D.C.
The package was opened inside a building on the base, which also accommodates the Air National Guard Readiness Center. Following the discovery, both that building and an adjacent one were evacuated as a safety measure, with a perimeter established around the area.
“As a precaution, the building and connecting building (at the base) were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area.”
First responders at Joint Base Andrews assessed the situation, found no immediate danger, and handed the incident over to the Office of Special Investigations. The individuals who fell ill were treated at the base’s Malcolm Grove Medical Center. An investigation into the origin and contents of the package is ongoing.
