Church of Jesus Christ Names Gérald Caussé as New Apostle

Presiding Bishop Gérald Caussé has been appointed as the newest member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The announcement was made Thursday in Salt Lake City.

Now Elder Caussé, aged 62, has served as the church’s presiding bishop for 11 years. He was called and ordained to the apostleship the same day by President Dallin H. Oaks and the other members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

"I've always had a testimony of Jesus Christ. He's always been in the center of my life. And I know He's our Savior and Redeemer. What a wonderful thing it is to be a witness of Christ. That's the best responsibility or stewardship we might have in our lives."

Background

Elder Caussé was born in Bordeaux, France. He became the third presiding bishop born outside the United States and the first for whom English is a second language. Before his calling as an apostle, he served as a counselor in the Presiding Bishopric and as a General Authority Seventy.

Personal Life

He married Valérie Babin on August 5, 1986, in the Bern Switzerland Temple. His church service has taken him and his family to both Germany and the United States.

Author’s summary: Gérald Caussé, a French church leader, was called as a new apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, marking a historic milestone for non-U.S. leadership.
