Guiteau's Role Before the 1880 Election

The new limited series portrays the brief presidency of the 20th commander in chief, who was assassinated by Charles J. Guiteau. Guiteau, a 39-year-old lawyer, believed his efforts had secured James A. Garfield's election. Before the 1880 presidential race, Guiteau distributed printed copies of a speech endorsing the leading candidate at the Republican National Convention.

Originally, the speech supported former President Ulysses S. Grant, but Grant lacked the votes for a third nomination. Garfield, recently elected as Ohio’s senator, became the alternative.

Guiteau’s Ambition and Garfield’s Victory

Guiteau did not favor one Ohio Civil War officer over another. He replaced Grant’s name with Garfield’s in his speech, confident his words could elevate either candidate. Garfield narrowly defeated Democratic General Winfield Scott Hancock to win the presidency.

Guiteau’s Failed Appointment Request

After Garfield's victory, Guiteau expected a reward for his support: a diplomatic post overseas.

“I hereby make a formal application for the Austrian Mission,” Guiteau wrote to Garfield and Secretary of State James G.
“I feel I have a right to do it on account of my services during the canvass.”

However, the appointment was never granted. Neither Garfield nor his ally James G. Blaine knew who Guiteau was.

Summary

The series highlights how Guiteau’s misguided ambition influenced a pivotal moment in history, revealing the thin line between political support and personal delusion.
