Reports indicate that Maple Leafs forward David Kampf has stepped away from the Toronto Marlies as he considers his future with the organization.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported on the Saturday Headlines and later on the 32 Thoughts podcast that Kampf is growing frustrated over not being part of the NHL roster. Friedman mentioned that Kampf has taken some time away from the club, which might lead to a contract termination.
"I don’t know exactly what was said…but Kampf did leave players with the Marlies [Leafs’ AHL affiliate] with the impression that he was going to terminate his contract."
Friedman suggested that Kampf and the Maple Leafs could agree to end his contract. He initially reported that Kampf was not with the Marlies during their game in Chicago and was unlikely to play soon.
"The Toronto Marlies are playing tonight in Chicago in the American Hockey League, and he’s not with them. I was told there’s a possibility he could play tomorrow, but I think that’s unlikely."
The Maple Leafs are currently facing a roster and salary cap crunch, which has contributed to Kampf's frustration. He is taking some days to reflect on his next steps.
"David Kampf has taken a couple of days to kind of think about his future. Obviously, he’s not playing with the Maple Leafs right now; he’s in a bit of a roster and salary cap crunch situation, and he got a little bit frustrated."
David Kampf is re-evaluating his position with the Maple Leafs amid roster challenges and may part ways with the organization.
