A sex offender who was accidentally released from HMP Wandsworth last week and remains at large has been identified as Brahim Kaddour-Cherif. The 24-year-old was freed from the high-security prison in London on October 29 by mistake. He was serving time for trespassing with intent to steal but has a history of sexual offences.
Kaddour-Cherif appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court in September on a charge of failing to comply with sex offender requirements, according to reports.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that he is of Algerian descent and are conducting urgent inquiries to locate him and return him to custody.
Labour MP for Tooting Dr Rosena Allin-Khan said she was "horrified" by the news, given the prisoner's "shocking list of offences."
She added, "Local residents will quite rightly be deeply concerned. We urgently need answers from the Government and Ministry of Justice as to how this was allowed to happen."
This incident occurred just days after another convicted sex offender was mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford in Essex. The offender, Hadush Kebatu, 38, was at large for three days before police arrested him in a north London park. Kebatu, an Ethiopian national, was seen being taken away by plain-clothed officers near a bus stop in Finsbury Park on October 26.
Author's summary: A sex offender wrongly released from Wandsworth Prison remains on the run amid strong local concern, following a similar recent prison release error in Essex.
