Walter James Jestings passed peacefully on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at age 92, surrounded by loved ones and great music. Born on February 3, 1933, in Newport, Rhode Island, to Charles Stewart Jestings Sr. and Christie Gertrude Jestings, Newport remains the family's cherished home.
Walt is deeply loved and will be missed by his children:
His grandchildren are Madison Collins (John Collins), Alexandria Brown, Dezmond Brown, and Luke Phillips. Walter also delighted in his great-grandchildren Walter, Ollie, and Cormac Collins, who affectionately called him “Grandpa Wallet” and “Popqua.”
He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Newport and beyond.
Walter graduated top of his class from the University of Rhode Island and pursued a career in civil engineering specializing in bridge design. He rose to become Chief of the Bridge Bureau. Colleagues described him as fair, respectful, and unmatched in work ethic.
Walter was happily married for 47 years to his hometown sweetheart, Sallye Ann Kendall, until her passing in 1996.
He lived in Newport, RI, Columbus, OH, and later Atlanta, GA.
