Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein recently debuted on Netflix, but originally, the role of The Creature was set to be played by someone else.
Until just weeks before filming began, Andrew Garfield was cast as Victor Frankenstein’s monstrous creation. However, in early January 2024, Garfield withdrew due to scheduling conflicts caused by the 2023 Hollywood strikes.
Jacob Elordi replaced him at the last moment, saving the project from further delays. This required hurried adjustments to the Creature’s makeup, which had been carefully designed over nine months for Garfield’s specific portrayal.
Del Toro and makeup artist Mike Hill then had only nine weeks to redesign the look for Elordi’s version. Del Toro told Vanity Fair,
“You can't be under more pressure than that.”
Looking back, the switch seems to have paid off, as Elordi fits the role exceptionally well. This is no criticism of Garfield, who likely would have brought an intriguing interpretation, but Elordi’s casting strengthens the film’s central theme.
The last-minute replacement of Andrew Garfield with Jacob Elordi in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein led to a creative challenge, ultimately enhancing the film’s impact.
