Jacob Elordi revealed he had one major hesitation before accepting the role of The Creature in Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein. Although excited to work with del Toro, Elordi was worried the character might be silent, which would be difficult to portray.
On Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast, the Euphoria star explained his initial thoughts:
"The only thought that I can remember having before I'd even gotten the script was that, and I shouldn't have doubted it, knowing Guillermo, but was that the Creature may be nonverbal and may be so sort of conceptual and hidden under this thing."
He also worried about expressing the Creature's inner struggles, saying,
"Obviously, there's always a performance in those creatures, but just that I wouldn't be able to maybe articulate the sort of existential crisis that the Creature's having."
Elordi's worries faded once he read del Toro’s script, discovering the character had more depth and dialogue than expected. He recalled,
"As soon as I read the script and he said, 'Now, I'll tell you my tale,' and I realised there was still this much script to go."
He praised the adaptation's fidelity to Mary Shelley's original work, adding,
"I was like, oh, wow, this is the Creature as it is in Mary Shelley's text."
Jacob Elordi overcame initial doubts about his silent role in Frankenstein, embracing the complexity of The Creature after reading del Toro's detailed script.
