A year after setting aside my PlayStation Portal, Sony’s major new update has completely renewed my interest in the device. The handheld now supports full cloud gaming access, liberating it from reliance on the PS5 or PS5 Pro.
When I reviewed the PlayStation Portal two years ago, I noted its strong potential and remarked:
"If it had access to cloud gaming too, it’d be better still."
A year later, Sony introduced cloud gaming in a limited beta that covered only a small selection of titles. Now, that feature is fully released and significantly enhanced.
Sony’s cloud option has grown far beyond early tests. It now allows streaming for a large portion of users’ purchased games. The company says more than a thousand titles are supported, visible through a new Your Library section that displays all compatible games ready to stream.
After applying the update, I found over a hundred games in my library immediately available for play. Some were titles I had owned for years but had nearly forgotten. In all my testing so far, performance has been consistently smooth and nearly lag-free.
Sony’s latest PlayStation Portal update finally fulfills its original promise, enabling full cloud gaming and reviving the handheld as a truly independent device.
