As Google’s Stadia fades into memory, cloud gaming continues to evolve. Sony is now expanding its presence in this field by introducing full cloud gaming functionality to the PlayStation Portal handheld.
The PlayStation Portal, similar in form to the Steam Deck, has so far functioned primarily as a remote streaming device for the PlayStation 5. It lacked standalone gaming capabilities. Now, with the new update, that limitation is being addressed through integrated cloud gaming.
Following successful testing, Sony announced that all PlayStation Portal owners can now use cloud gaming directly on the handheld. This means players will be able to access certain digital PlayStation 5 games from their own libraries without linking to their console via Remote Play.
“Select digital PS5 games from their own library” can now be streamed without a connected PS5.
Beyond personal libraries, a larger collection of PlayStation titles will be accessible through cloud streaming with a PlayStation Plus subscription. Sony has also updated the device with a dedicated Cloud Streaming home screen and a search function to easily sort and launch available games.
Access to the cloud gaming service on the Portal requires a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, priced at $18 per month, ensuring entry into Sony’s expanding game streaming ecosystem.
