Canyon-like Yidan Center by Zaha Hadid Architects Tops Out in Shenzhen's Cultural Quarter

Construction has reached its full height on the Yidan Center in Shenzhen, China, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. Spanning 165,815 square meters, the complex will host the international headquarters of the Yidan Prize and the Chen Yidan Foundation, promoting lifelong learning and educational innovation.

Located in the rapidly growing cultural quarter near the new Qianhai Museum, the project is poised to become a landmark for research and culture in the city.

Fluid Design Inspired by the Landscape

Zaha Hadid Architects shaped the Yidan Center as a seamless environment inspired by Shenzhen’s distinctive topography. The design draws from the local canyons and valleys, historically used as natural pathways of movement and exchange, to create a flowing architectural composition.

At the heart of the complex lies an open-air canyon that connects multiple levels. Surrounding terraces and balconies face this central space, encouraging collaboration and interaction among visitors and researchers.

Educational Mission and Vision

“The Chen Yidan Foundation champions the diversification of education systems as a path toward sustainable development.”

Founded by Charles Chen Yidan, one of Tencent’s key founders, the foundation continues its global pursuit of educational excellence. Since the creation of the Yidan Prize in 2016, Dr. Yidan has aimed to unite educators, researchers, and innovators to improve education worldwide.

The new Yidan Center embodies this mission through architecture, providing facilities for research, exhibitions, and community programs that integrate culture and learning.
