Zaha Hadid Architects’ Yidan Center Reaches Major Construction Milestone in Shenzhen
The Yidan Center in Shenzhen designed by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has reached its full height, marking a significant milestone for this cultural and educational landmark.
Purpose and Function
The building will become the international headquarters for the Chen Yidan Foundation and the Yidan Prize. It is envisioned as a hub for convergence and collaboration, supporting research platforms, cultural events, and ecosystems for lifelong learning.
Design and Architecture
Spanning 165,815 m², the Yidan Center will be the cornerstone of a new cultural district linked to the nearby Qianhai Museum. Its design draws inspiration from the natural canyons and valleys in the surrounding landscape.
- A central outdoor “canyon” forms the heart of the structure, around which terraces and balconies are arranged.
- Lush gardens guide visitors from street level upward, creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.
- A large oculus skylight at the base of the canyon fills the interior with natural light.
Sustainability Features
Sustainability is a key focus of the project. The Yidan Center aims to meet the highest three-star standard of China’s National Green Building Program and achieve LEED Gold certification.
