Feeding Tampa Bay helps with the SNAP benefit crisis

Feeding Tampa Bay Responds to SNAP Benefit Crisis

As the government shutdown continues, cuts to SNAP benefits are increasingly impacting residents. On Monday afternoon, FOX 13's Evan Axelbank visited Feeding Tampa Bay, where many people came to receive food assistance.

Impact of Shutdown on SNAP and Health Insurance

With the federal government shutdown persisting into November, SNAP benefits for the month have been delayed until funding is restored. Representative Kathy Castor warned that beyond food aid, health insurance premiums are expected to rise sharply.

Feeding Tampa Bay’s Efforts and Challenges

Feeding Tampa Bay quickly recognized the growing need and took action to address it. CEO Thomas Mantz emphasized the importance of food security, stating:

No one should be without a meal, irrespective of the circumstances. We want to make sure we keep that from happening.

The organization estimates 500,000 people in Florida rely on SNAP benefits. Mantz highlighted the strain on resources:

If you do the math, we could need another million meals per week we're trying to provide. We do not have the resources to do that, but we'll do whatever we can.

Community Involvement and Outreach

Feeding Tampa Bay is calling for community support to help meet the increased demand. Mantz noted the shutdown’s impact became more apparent as awareness grew:

For many, the shutdown wasn't a reality until they really started to see this particular situation. Now that more in our community are aware, the more are stepping in.

To respond, Feeding Tampa Bay organized a large-scale food distribution event.
