Desert Ark: The First 3D-Printed Concrete Structure in the Chinese Desert

Desert Ark is a series of 3D-printed concrete shelters created by the Chinese architecture studio designRESERVE. Located in the Tengger Desert, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, these structures provide shelter for volunteers engaged in tree planting and reforestation efforts in this arid region.

Project Overview

The project covers 150 square meters and consists of nine separate modules, including bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms, showers, and toilets. These units are arranged around a central shared terrace.

Construction Details

The modules were manufactured using additive manufacturing technology with a cement and sand concrete mixture.
To ensure quality, the 3D printing was done in a dedicated factory rather than on-site, avoiding the adverse desert weather.
On-site assembly of the modules took only two days.

Functionality and Mobility

The modules serve different purposes such as dining, resting, and cooking. They are designed to be relocatable, allowing them to move as reforestation progresses in the area.
