The Pitt women’s soccer team closed a challenging season with an unexpected triumph over top-ranked Notre Dame at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The decisive moment came in the 85th minute when, following a late corner by senior forward Margaret Wilde, junior defender Mya Archibald scored with a precise header into the left post.
Junior goalkeeper Abby Reisz delivered one of her finest performances of the year, making six saves and halting a key first-half attack that could have set the tone for the Irish. Notre Dame entered the match needing only a win or draw to secure the ACC regular-season championship, and the trophy was already waiting under the field.
Guided by junior captain Olivia Lee, the Panthers’ defensive line maintained discipline and compact shape, limiting Notre Dame’s chances and keeping them from finding rhythm in the penalty area. Despite the Irish scoring eight goals in one match earlier this season, Pitt’s determined defense kept them scoreless.
This victory marked the first time in program history that Pitt women’s soccer defeated a No. 1-ranked team.
Although the Panthers finished with a 6-10-2 overall record and just two ACC wins, they ended their season proving resilience and pride on their home field.
Pitt women’s soccer closed a rocky season on a high note with a historic upset over top-ranked Notre Dame, showcasing resilience and defensive excellence.
