Medník House, designed by Czech studio Päivä Architekti, rejuvenates and extends a century-old hillside residence overlooking the Sázava River in the Czech Republic. The extension integrates seamlessly at the junction of forest and garden, shaped by the terrain and surrounded by mature trees.
Design and Location
The renovated structure aligns with expansive views of the valley and Medník Hill, preserving the openness that characterizes the site. A freestanding studio addition is connected to the original home through a covered terrace. This terrace wraps around an existing oak tree, ensuring the tree remains a central element within the composition.
Transition Between Spaces
A covered walkway leads toward the garden, blending interior and exterior environments and extending the flow of everyday movement outdoors.
Interior Features
The new studio is an open, double-height space filled with natural light through sliding glass walls facing the valley. Inside, a compact gallery hangs quietly above the workspace, offering a peaceful retreat within the volume.
Architectural Approach
The building’s clean geometry reflects the form of the original house but is interpreted with a contemporary style. The structural design balances craftsmanship with a practical approach.
