Jay Som is the project of Melina Duterte, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. She will release her new album Belong on November 7. Before the album's launch, Jay Som shares the track "Past Lives," featuring Hayley Williams from Paramore.
The two artists met in Nashville to collaborate on the song, alongside Steph Marziano. Williams’ gentle harmonies in the sweeping "Past Lives" enhance the song's feeling of drifting through emotional lows, gaining momentum only to see it fade away. The track’s intense midsection reflects an internal struggle, powerful and raw.
“It’s a dream come true to have Hayley sing on my first feature on an album before the recording of ‘Float,’ I still can’t believe it happened,” Duterte says of the collaboration.
“She’s one of the kindest artists out there and she graciously accepts and uplifts the people around her. We’re all so lucky to witness her talent and live on the same timeline as her.”
Belong features contributions from Joao Gonzalez (Soft Glas), Mal Hauser (Mk.gee, Illuminati Hotties), Steph Marziano (producer for Vundabar, Hot Wax, Sir Chloe), and Kyle Pulley. For the first time, Jay Som also welcomed guest vocalists on the album.
Author's summary: Jay Som’s new album Belong presents a powerful collaboration with Hayley Williams, blending heartfelt harmonies and introspective lyrics that reveal personal and musical growth.
