Sam Smith shared a rare and candid reflection on undergoing liposuction at the age of 13 due to bullying about their weight. The musician spoke on Penn Badgley’s podcast, Podcrushed, on November 5th, offering insight into their early struggles.
Growing up in Cambridgeshire, Sam revealed that teasing was primarily focused on their weight rather than their queer identity. They explained,
“For me, it was always my weight. My queerness was something that I could handle, and I could have a grasp on it. But my weight as a kid was the hardest thing for me in school, and weirdly the thing I probably got teased the most about.”
To address the bullying, Sam underwent liposuction at a very young age, describing the experience as follows:
“I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old because I had a growing chest. There was all sorts of reasons why, but mainly that I was just getting so teased. I couldn’t go swimming in school, and getting changed in the locker room was hell. So I got liposuction when I was 13 years old.”
Liposuction is a highly invasive procedure that removes fat by inserting a tube through the small intestines to suction out persistent fat deposits.
Despite Sam’s young age, their parents fully backed the decision to have the surgery, supporting them through the process.
Sam Smith revealed that their parents supported their liposuction surgery at age 13 after years of bullying about weight, though it offered only temporary relief.
