Sam Smith, the non-binary singer who uses they/them pronouns, shared that they underwent liposuction surgery at 13 after facing severe bullying about their weight during secondary school. They described weight, rather than their queerness, as their biggest challenge growing up.
Speaking on the Podcrushed podcast, Sam, 33, said their weight was "the thing I probably got teased the most about" while attending a Catholic high school in Hertfordshire. The relentless teasing made activities like swimming and changing in the locker room very difficult.
Sam explained:
"I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old, because I had a growing chest... I was just getting so teased, I couldn't go swimming in school, and I couldn't—like, getting changed in the locker room was hell. So I got liposuction when I was 13 years old."
They added that their parents were "hugely supportive of the whole thing," recognizing how much the bullying affected their wellbeing.
Despite the surgery, Sam said it wasn't fully successful, jokingly noting, "I just love food."
