The Cook Islands have earned their place at the IRL Rugby League World Cup 2026 after a commanding 58–6 victory over South Africa in Sunday’s qualifying match at CommBank Stadium in Sydney.
With this result, the Aitu become the 14th nation to qualify for RLWC26. They join Australia, England, Fiji, France, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, and Wales among the teams that will compete in the men’s tournament at the end of next season.
The Cook Islands surged in the second half, sealing the win with an impressive display of teamwork and determination.
"Going to the World Cup, it's massive for us," said KL Iro, who plays for the Cronulla Sharks. "We talked about this over the past month. Really stoked to achieve this reward. We felt we’d been challenging ourselves hard in the recent games in Fiji and Papua New Guinea."
Teammate Brendan Piakura credited their time together in Rarotonga following their Pacific Bowl campaign for strengthening team chemistry.
"I'm excited — exciting times," he said.
