Celebrity chef shares fond memories of weekly visits to Swindon

Celebrity Chef Rick Stein Reminisces About Swindon

Celebrity chef, TV presenter, and restaurateur Rick Stein has shared heartfelt memories of Swindon, just a month after closing his only restaurant in Wiltshire. Known for his popular restaurant chain across the UK and numerous cookbooks, Stein reflected on his connection to the town during an interview with the Swindon Advertiser.

Memories from His University Days

Despite his fame alongside chefs like Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay, Stein revealed that Swindon played a small yet meaningful role in his youth. The 78-year-old recalled how, during his university years, he frequently traveled to Swindon to work on a student publication.

"When I was a young lad and attending Oxford University, I used to come to Swindon every week to print the student newspaper called The Cherwell," he said.

He added that he hasn’t been back for many years but still remembers the town fondly.

"I haven't been to Swindon in many years and I should probably go back, but I do have very fond memories of it. The town always makes me think of the smell of the printing press and brings it all back."

Recent Changes in His Career

On October 5, Stein closed his restaurant in Marlborough, his last remaining venue in Wiltshire. Soon after, he postponed his planned theatre tour that was due to visit Swindon this winter, citing the challenging economic climate affecting the hospitality sector.

Reflections on Today’s Restaurant Industry

Stein’s conversation shed light not only on his nostalgia but also on the broader struggles faced by pubs and restaurants across the country amid rising costs and shifting consumer habits.
