Ian Leavers, Queensland’s Cross Border Commissioner and former police union president, has died suddenly, prompting an outpouring of tributes. He was widely recognized as a prominent and influential leader in Queensland.
“Queenslanders will remember his leadership during some our State’s most tragic and defining events,” said Premier David Crisafulli.
The 58-year-old was described by Crisafulli as “dedicated, principled and driven,” earning respect for his unwavering support of the Queensland police service.
As Queensland’s first Cross-Border Commissioner, Leavers played a vital role addressing challenges for communities and businesses on state borders during the critical COVID-19 recovery period.
His contributions began as a member of Queensland Police and continued as president of the Queensland Police Union, where he fought for safer working conditions and better resources for officers.
“On behalf of all Queenslanders, we extend heartfelt condolences to Ian’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
