A moderate Liberal has taken control of one of the party's weakest branches following the unexpected resignation of its two leaders. Mark Parton now leads the Canberra Liberals after Leanne Castley and her deputy Jeremy Hanson stepped down on Monday.
Ms. Castley, who ousted then-Liberal leader Elizabeth Lee after the October 2024 election defeat, expressed hope that the leadership change will position the party for success in the 2028 election.
"In the spirit of ensuring a genuine fresh start for the new team, we will not be commenting publicly on the circumstances that have led to this decision."
— Leanne Castley
The Canberra Liberals have spent over two decades in political isolation and will have been in opposition for approximately 27 years by the 2028 election.
"It's vital that we continue to strengthen the cohesion within our party. By encouraging open dialogue, valuing diverse perspectives, and finding common ground, we can reinforce our shared purpose."
— Mark Parton
The party faces criticism that its members are too conservative for the progressive ACT, where it currently holds no federal seats.
Mark Parton’s leadership represents a fresh attempt to unify and revitalize a long-opposition Canberra Liberal party ahead of the challenging 2028 election.
