The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has launched an online map displaying areas suitable for various types of geothermal energy use. This initiative is designed to encourage sustainable energy development across the region.
The map provides a strategic foundation for investment and project planning, supporting the efficient and targeted deployment of geothermal resources within Aargau. It serves as a key tool for guiding decisions on future geothermal energy projects.
"Geothermal energy, particularly for shallow heat extraction using ground source heat pumps, already contributes significantly to sustainable and secure energy supply and supports the goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050."
Recognizing the region's favorable geothermal conditions, the Cantonal Government approved a motion from the Grand Council in March 2022 to develop a geothermal register that identifies potential across Aargau’s municipalities.
The Energy Division of the Department of Construction, Transport, and Environment, together with internal and external experts, conducted a detailed study on the canton’s geothermal potential, forming the basis for the newly published map.
The Canton of Aargau created an online geothermal suitability map to boost regional renewable energy development and support Switzerland’s path toward carbon neutrality by 2050.
