UK budget airline Jet2 is setting up a base at London Gatwick Airport, planning to operate six aircraft and launch nearly 30 new leisure routes starting from summer next year.
Jet2’s Gatwick network will primarily target Mediterranean leisure spots. The airline’s inaugural flight from this base is scheduled for 26 March, heading to Tenerife in the Canary Islands.
This new Gatwick base will be Jet2’s 14th overall. The airline intends to use a fleet of six planes, including five Airbus A321neos, for operations from the airport.
EasyJet remains Gatwick’s biggest operator, handling 44% of its passengers last year. Wizz Air, a Central European low-cost carrier, also maintains a base there.
“The base represents a significant investment for the region, supporting 300 positions directly.”
Jet2’s Gatwick base will bolster regional employment while expanding budget travel options to popular Mediterranean destinations.
