Nevada's Rosen accuses US senator of stalking her staff to collect car info

Nevada's Jacky Rosen Accuses Senator Moreno of Stalking Staff for Car Information

During a Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee hearing on transportation nominees, Senator Jacky Rosen (D-Nevada) accused Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) of invading her staff's privacy to collect car details.

Controversial Comment on Vehicle Safety Features

As nominee Ryan McCormack was questioned about vehicle safety features, Senator Moreno revealed he had gathered Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) from his Democratic colleagues' cars.

“Would it surprise you that I got the VIN numbers of every one of my Democrat colleagues' vehicles and found that none of them bought any of the additional safety technologies on their cars?”

Moreno criticized the Democrats for not purchasing extra safety features with their own money while advocating mandates for all drivers.

“So, when you are actually shopping for a car with your own money, you don't buy the technology, but we're sitting here saying that this should be mandated for everybody else's cars.”

Rosen Challenges Moreno on Privacy Invasion

Senator Rosen raised concerns about how Moreno obtained the VINs, calling it an overreach of privacy. Moreno stated that VINs are visible on the windshield or driver’s side door sticker of a car.

When Rosen asked if Moreno had physically inspected her car in Las Vegas, Moreno questioned whether she used a car in Washington, D.C., to which Rosen replied, “That is my staff’s car.”

Details on VIN Visibility

“VIN numbers are displayed on the windshield of the car.”

This exchange highlights tensions over privacy and the political debate on mandatory vehicle safety features.
