Goatboy here, and we need to talk about how there are too many dang Ultramarine characters in 40K right now, with more on the way! Goatboy here and the hot mess for today is the newest mess GW has made. Today I want to talk about how there are too many dang Ultramarine characters right now. Heck there are two many Ultramarine Characters that are the same character but different sets of rules.
This is a bit of a mess and while I expect some of them to get legend’ed there is a bit of a problem when say a player uses the newer model to represent the better old one.
Let’s look at the current poster child for the Ultramarine – Mr. He has two different versions with obviously two different design philosophies for them.
The first one – the Marneus Gravgar (thanks Mr. Lennon) has been constantly tweaked this entire edition. His point level has been raised, dropped, and aggressively pushed that when you compare the old one to the new one there is almost no reason to take the shiny new Marneus Terminator Daddy or M Taddy for short. He just costs too much for less attacks, wounds, and presence in a unit. Which is just weird and annoying if you ask me. It feels like the old one needs a nice rules reshuffle to really split the difference on the two models. Gravgar needs to get a points increase as he just seems too good to not take – especially with all the new Victrix nonsense you can pull right now.
Author’s note: The text emphasizes dissatisfaction with the proliferation of Ultramarines characters and the perceived imbalance between old and new versions, particularly around Marneus Gravgar and related rules changes.
Summary: The piece argues that Ultramarines dominate 40K content with multiple versions of the same character and conflicting rules, creating confusion and imbalance, especially around Gravgar and recent Victrix options.
