A man who carried out an unprovoked street assault in an Isle of Wight town has been sentenced.
Shaun William Austin, of Barton Road, Newport, attacked another man without warning, kicking him in the head while wearing flip-flops.
The court heard that Austin approached his victim on the street and delivered a sudden, violent kick to the man’s head.
Despite the dangerous nature of the attack, the victim managed to escape with non-life-threatening injuries.
During sentencing, the judge noted the senseless brutality of the act, emphasizing that there was no provocation or justification.
Austin’s actions, the court ruled, showed disregard for both the law and public safety.
He was sentenced to a period of imprisonment and ordered to cover court costs.
"This was an entirely unprovoked attack that could have caused serious harm," the judge said.
Local residents expressed concern over rising incidents of unprovoked violence in the area. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring public safety and urged witnesses of street violence to report such behavior immediately.
