Gov. Stein announces medical debt milestone, calls on Washington to extend subsidies

Medical Debt Relief Milestone Announced by Gov. Stein

Gov. Josh Stein announced that over $6.5 billion in medical debt has been relieved for more than 2.5 million North Carolinians.

A senior citizen in Greenville, Yolanda Sheppard, expressed relief, stating that some seniors avoid seeking care due to fear of incurring new debt, saying:

They'd rather take a loss and just go home to sit and let their back heal or however they're going to do it. It's kind of sad, I find, that unfortunately this stuff happens.

Despite progress, uncertainty surrounds Medicaid due to potential cuts, including a proposed 15 percent cut to Medicaid spending by President Trump's administration.

The secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services notes that these cuts will not immediately impact the debt relief program.
