Advancing Nigerian Aquaculture With U.S. Soy
Nigeria, the largest aquaculture fish producer in sub-Saharan Africa, faces a significant challenge in meeting demand, requiring over 3 million metric tons of fish annually, with current production being less than half of this amount.
A key issue is the availability of affordable, high-quality fish feed. To address this, a new partnership has been formed between the U.S. soybean industry and Nigeria to enhance fish production and increase access to protein-rich feed.
The Memorandum of Understanding recognizes the significant role that high-quality soy-based feeds play in achieving regional aquaculture sector growth and success.
According to United Soybean Board Director Nancy Kavazanjian, a Wisconsin soybean farmer, this collaboration supports young aquaculturists abroad while building long-term demand for U.S. soy, a timely development given China's boycott of U.S. soy.
Fish feed is considered a major bottleneck to the future growth of Nigerian aquaculture.
