A recent study published in JAMA Neurology found that menopause does not worsen disability accumulation in women with multiple sclerosis (MS).
According to Francesca Bridge, MBBS, neurologist at Alfred Health in Melbourne, Australia, and Ph.D. candidate at Monash University, the results of the study were
reassuring, but surprising.
Bridge notes that while menopause may not have long-term implications for MS disease progression, menopause symptoms can still
exacerbate symptomsassociated with MS, such as hot flashes.
The finding is a relief for menopausal women with MS, who often have unaddressed concerns over disease progression, says Bridge.
Author's summary: Menopause doesn't worsen MS disability accumulation.
