Violent crime on the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has risen to its second-highest level in the past decade, with 2,893 crimes reported at CTA stations and platforms between August and July.
The arrest rate for these crimes has dropped, with fewer than 1-in-5 violent CTA crimes leading to an arrest, compared to a little over 1-in-4 for all transit crimes.
Federal authorities threaten to cut Chicago transit funding unless public safety improves.
As a result, the CTA is planning a fare hike of 25 cents per ride, and state lawmakers are considering a bailout of the system and other Chicago-area mass transit.
Author's summary: CTA violent crime rises to near decade high, threatening federal funding.
