Info Session Outlines New FEMA Flood Maps, Insurance Options for Tompkins Co. Residents

Over the summer, FEMA updated its flood zone maps for Tompkins County. An information session was held at the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce in Ithaca for people to learn about the maps and ask questions.

According to Valarie VanGorder, Vice President of Bailey Place Insurance, the session covered various topics, including:

"There were some landlord property owners here for tenant insurance, that kind of thing. Basements, what’s covered in a basement (and) what isn’t covered,"

In 2003, Congress mandated that FEMA update all the flood maps across the country, with Cortland County's maps updated in 2010. The reason for the update in Tompkins County at this time is unclear.
