Pattern is one of decorating’s greatest magic tricks, capable of expanding or contracting a space, altering a mood, or pulling a scheme together with one single element.
According to interior designer Chloe Willis, associate director at Sybil Colefax & John Fowler,
“You don’t need to be constrained by the scale of the pattern… You have to decide the feeling you want and use the pattern with purpose.”
The size of the pattern can greatly impact the space, and designers emphasize the importance of getting the proportions right to achieve harmony and avoid visual chaos.
In the main bedroom of decorator Cindy Leveson's London flat, a large-scale wallpaper, Colefax & Fowler's ‘Sudbury Park’ in blue, is used as a subtle backdrop, demonstrating how a large pattern can be used effectively.
