A report submitted to Derry City and Strabane District Council as part of a Listed Building Consent application for the former Convent of Mercy on Pump Street revealed the presence of asbestos.
The "Refurbishment / Demolition Asbestos Survey" was completed on September 28, 2016, and stated:
Urgent remedial action is required to make safe asbestos identified on this site.
The application for "partial controlled demolition of [the] unsafe structure" was submitted on October 8 by MKA Planning after the unoccupied Grade BI listed building partially collapsed on October 5.
The collapse led to Pump Street being cordoned off to prevent vehicular access.
Author's summary: Asbestos found in collapsed building nine years ago.
