Wheelchair-Bound Man Arrested for Meat Theft at Publix
A 56-year-old man, Thomas Dean Martin, has been arrested for stealing meat from a Publix store in The Villages.
According to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, Martin, who is wheelchair-bound, entered the store and concealed packages of meat in his wheelchair. He then proceeded to a self-checkout lane, scanning and bagging other merchandise, but failed to pay for the meat, valued at $175.
Martin, who has previous theft convictions, was confronted by Publix personnel as he attempted to leave the store. This latest charge has been elevated to a felony due to his prior convictions.
Martin was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center with a $10,000 bond.
