A registered charity in Mayo has secured three derelict houses, out of six vacant properties that were acquired by Mayo County Council during the construction of the Turlough to Westport dual carriageway in 2016/17.
The CEO of Mayo County Council, Kevin Kelly, confirmed the news at a recent monthly meeting, although the name of the charity has not been released until the deal is finalized.
The news was widely welcomed by all councillors.
Councillor Peter Flynn had a motion to reinvest the sale proceeds of these properties into local affordable or social homes, which was amended to apply to the three remaining properties.
However, according to Kevin Kelly, the sale of the homes by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to Mayo County Council was under strict criteria.
